2022-02-14

In 2021, the nonferrous metals industry overcame the adverse impacts of recurring COVID-19 outbreaks, seized opportunities presented by the recovery of both domestic and international markets, continued to deepen supply-side structural reform, ensured the efficient supply of industrial and supply chains, and accelerated the intelligent, green, and high-end transformation of traditional industries, resulting in overall stable industry performance.

I. Steady Growth in Output. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2021, the output of ten major nonferrous metals reached 64.54 million tonnes, representing a year-on-year increase of 5.4% and an average annual growth of 5.1% over the past two years.

II. Prices Remain at High Levels. According to statistics from the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, in 2021 bulk nonferrous metal prices continued to hover at elevated levels, with average spot prices for copper, aluminum, lead, and zinc standing at RMB 68,490 per tonne, RMB 18,946 per tonne, RMB 15,278 per tonne, and RMB 22,579 per tonne, respectively—up 40.5%, 33.5%, 3.4%, and 22.1% year on year.

III. Substantial Growth in Import and Export Values. According to data from the General Administration of Customs, in 2021, imports of copper concentrate totaled 23.404 million tonnes, up 7.6% year on year, with import value reaching US$56.76 billion, a year-on-year increase of 55.6%; imports of unwrought copper and copper products amounted to 5.529 million tonnes, down 17.2% year on year, but with import value rising by 20.5% to US$52.45 billion; exports of unwrought aluminum and aluminum products reached 5.619 million tonnes, up 15.7% year on year, with export value increasing by 48.7% to US$19.47 billion.

In 2022, the nonferrous metals industry will thoroughly implement the spirit of the Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee and adhere to the requirements of the Central Economic Work Conference by prioritizing stability while seeking progress, ensuring the supply of primary products, and strengthening coordinated development across the upstream and downstream sectors. It will balance development with emissions reduction, benchmark against industry leaders, accelerate the R&D and deployment of key green and low-carbon technologies, and carry out energy-saving and carbon-reduction upgrades. At the same time, the industry will steadfastly pursue the strategy of expanding domestic demand, enhance its capacity to supply high-end new materials, seize opportunities in the new-energy sector, cultivate new growth drivers, and continuously improve the quality and efficiency of its development.
