The China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association convened a symposium with several leading electrolytic aluminum enterprises.

2019-02-13

On December 21, the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association convened a symposium in Nanning, Guangxi, bringing together leading electrolytic aluminum producers to discuss the current domestic and international market conditions for alumina and electrolytic aluminum, as well as future trends in aluminum consumption. Twenty major electrolytic aluminum companies, including Chinalco, State Power Investment Corporation, China Hongqiao Group, Xinfa Group, Hangzhou Jinjiang Group, and Oriental Hope, attended the meeting.

Participants noted that domestic aluminum prices have now fallen to the industry’s average cash‑cost threshold, pushing companies’ operating pressures to near their limits—indeed, surpassing even the worst conditions of the fourth quarter of 2015. Since the second quarter, some producers have progressively adopted flexible production measures, with output cuts expanding further in the second half of the year. To date, China’s suspended electrolytic aluminum capacity exceeds 3.2 million tonnes per year, with roughly 80% of these shutdowns concentrated in the second half; over the coming period, planned production curtailments could exceed 800,000 tonnes per year. The participating firms expressed strong confidence in the steady and favorable trajectory of China’s economy in 2019 and remain firmly optimistic about the outlook for aluminum consumption. To ensure the industry’s stable and sustainable operation, attendees proposed policy adjustments to electrolytic aluminum imports and exports, continued expansion of aluminum applications, and the creation of a fair and sound financial‑credit environment.
