The “Ultra-Low Emission Technology for Aluminum Electrolysis Flue Gas” Scientific and Technological Achievement Evaluation and Promotion Conference Was Held.

2018-08-23

From July 5 to 7, the evaluation and promotion conference for the scientific and technological achievement “Development and Industrialization of Lime–Gypsum-Based Desulfurization, Defluorination, and Dust Removal Technology for Aluminum Electrolysis Flue Gas,” hosted by the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association and jointly implemented by Huo Coal Hongjun Aluminum & Electricity Co., Ltd., Inner Mongolia Jinlian Aluminum Profile Co., Ltd., and Inner Mongolia Chuangyuan Metal Co., Ltd., was held in Horqin Gol City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

During the evaluation meeting, participants heard presentations on the project’s technical development from Huo Coal Hongjun Aluminum & Power Co., Ltd., as well as application reports from Inner Mongolia Jinlian Aluminum Profile Co., Ltd. and Inner Mongolia Chuangyuan Metal Co., Ltd. Following expert questioning and discussion, on-site inspections by enterprise representatives at the implementation site of the “limestone–gypsum” flue‑gas desulfurization, defluorination, and dust‑removal technology for aluminum electrolysis, and a formal expert review process, the evaluation panel announced its conclusions. The conclusions provided a scientific assessment across several dimensions, including the degree of technological innovation, the advanced nature of technical performance indicators, the level of technical difficulty and complexity, the reproducibility and maturity of the technology, the role of the innovation in advancing industry‑wide technological progress and enhancing market competitiveness, and the associated economic and social benefits. The panel concluded that the technology achieves emission reductions of sulfur dioxide below 35 mg/Nm³, fluorides below 0.3 mg/Nm³, and particulate matter below 5 mg/Nm³. Overall, the technology was deemed to have reached an internationally advanced level; widespread adoption among domestic aluminum smelting enterprises would substantially cut emissions of SO₂, HF, and particulate matter, thereby effectively improving air quality and delivering significant environmental and social benefits. The panel recommended accelerating the dissemination and application of these results, while also conducting follow-up research on desulfurization gypsum and exploring its comprehensive utilization.

According to reports, the implementation of this emission-reduction technology has yielded results that fall far short of national standards; it has now been successfully submitted for adoption as a standard in the nonferrous metals industry. Based on engineering design parameters, Hulunbuir City’s existing electrolytic aluminum capacity of 1.763 million tonnes could annually reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 21,000 tonnes, fluoride emissions by 350 tonnes, and particulate matter by 640 tonnes, with overall reductions exceeding 90%.
