China has commenced construction on its second large-scale alumina project in Indonesia.

On December 8, the Bintan alumina project in Indonesia—jointly undertaken by MCC Overseas Indonesia and China No. 3 Metallurgical Corporation—held its groundbreaking ceremony. Guests attending the event included Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin, Presidential Special Envoy and Head of the Presidential Office Moeldoko, and Chairman of Nanshan Group Song Jianbo, among others. The ceremony was presided over by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin. This project marks the second large-scale alumina venture invested in by Chinese enterprises in Indonesia, with a total planned investment of US$5.5 billion. It will be developed in phases and stages, featuring an annual alumina production capacity of 2 million tons, an annual electrolytic aluminum output of 1 million tons, a power plant with a total installed capacity of 2,860 MW, and a dedicated port capable of handling 20 million tons per year, along with integrated supporting facilities for water supply, religious services, education, commerce, a garment factory, and public amenities. The first phase will construct an alumina production line with an annual capacity of 1 million tons.
